If your Autorun is enabled, simply place the Jeff Gordon (r) XS Racing(tm) CD into your CD ROM drive and the installer will appear on your screen in a matter of seconds. If the installer does not appear, then the game will have to be installed manually. To do this, make sure the CD in inserted in the CD-ROM drive, then double click on the "My Computer" icon, which is usually on the upper left-hand corner. After doing so, a list of the available drives on your PC will appear. Double click on the drive that corresponds to your CD ROM drive (usually the D:, however this varies depending on the computer). This should bring up the installer. The installer will prompt you to choose which folder you wish to install Jeff Gordon (r) XS Racing(tm) into. Click your mouse on the "Next" key to select the default folders (recommended). After the folders are selected, the game will begin installing. You will be given the choice of a "Compact" or a "Typical" installation. A compact installation will install the game, but will not install the cinematics onto your PC's hard-drive. Use this installation if you do not have much space on your PC. The trade off is that the cinematics may not play as smoothly as they would should you have chosen a "Typical" installation. The "Typical" installation on the other hand will install the game, plus all of the cinematics. At the completion of the install, you will be asked if you wish to re-install Direct X. If your PC does not have Direct X 6.0 installed, or if you are not sure, we recommend that you select the "Re-Install" button. Jeff Gordon (r) XS Racing(tm) will not run without Direct X 6.0. Follow the prompts until you are prompted to re-start your PC. After your PC starts up again, you will be ready to play. To Play Jeff Gordon (r) XS Racing(tm): Simply double click your mouse cursor on the Jeff Gordon (r) XS Racing(tm) icon that will appear on your Windows desktop. Configuring Before You Play: There are several options on this menu, all of which are machine dependent. If you have a video card (i.e.: a 3DFX accelerator, or a Direct 3-D Video Card (Check with your PC manufacturer if you are not sure), select the "Hardware" option from the menu. This will enable you to play Jeff Gordon at its peak performance. We highly recommend this usage. However, if you do not have an accelerator, then select the "Software" option from the menu. Next to these settings are the resolution settings. You may choose resolutions of 320 x 240 or 640 x 480. The higher setting (640 x 480) will provide a crisper look to the game, but will require a higher end machine to play at an optimum performance. We recommend using the 320 x 240 setting should you own a 166 MHz PC with 16 MB of RAM. NOTE: Should you be playing with a 3DFX graphics card, the 320 x 240 setting does not apply, as these cards only support resolutions of 640 x 480. After your settings are made, select "OK" and the opening cinematic will appear. After the cinematic plays, the game will be running with a menu overlaying it. The menu will have the following options: Graphics: There are three graphics options: High, Medium and Low. Once again, depending on the performance of your machine, you should choose accordingly. High detail will feature more background effects that add to the racing experience. Should you be experiencing slow down, we suggest exiting the game (via the "Escape" key), restarting the game, and selecting the "Low" option from the graphics menu. Laps: The laps setting can be adjusted from 1 to 8 laps. This number determines how many laps in the race. Cars: The cars option determines how many CPU controlled racers you will be up against. This number is changeable from 1 (just you) to 30 (!). Only choose a high number of cars should you have a higher end machine. Track: The track option selects the track you wish to play. For the demo, you can only select the "Pepsi 2000" track. However, for the final version of the game, there will be more tracks to select. Difficulty: Choose a difficulty mode, this determines the challenge of the race. Input: The "Input" option selects the controller that you wish to play the game with. Jeff Gordon (r) XS Racing(tm) supports every major peripheral on the market. So you are able to select anything from a steering wheel (should you have one) to the keyboard.
